Interfacing Schools & the Community

The School Readiness Nurse Initiative Program (SRN) strengthens the connections between local pediatricians, schools, and community resources. This program focuses on the needs of children and their families from 0 to 5 years of age. Through this program, the Chapter provides education and resources for the nurses. The resources available include the use of developmental screening tools, parent information handouts, and educational updates. In addition, the SRN program includes communication with a pediatrician, who will provide clinical advice and telephone triage support for the nurses. A form has been developed- Communications Tool- that can be completed by the nurse to request the support of the pediatrician for clinical questions, as well as various referral and resource options that are available.
The SRN program also provides educational opportunities for both nurses and parent groups during the school year. These educational presentations enable the SRN to have access to the latest clinical and developmental standards of care available. The educational presentations have focused on the immunization needs of children, developmental screening/referral options, lead poisoning, growth and development, dietary needs of the preschool child, dermatology update, communicable disease information, mental health access to care, and other topics of interest for the SRN. Additional educational opportunities for parents as well as health care providers in the community are available upon request.
